  • Do not tan or have intense sun exposure 3 days before treatment.

  • No chemical peels, dermabrasion, laser or any other intense treatments 2 weeks before treatment.

  • Shower and fix your hair (as you need to take extra care not to get the application area wet for several days).

Pre-appointment instructions

Eyeliner Instructions

  • Do not wear contact lenses during the procedure or for 24 hours after.

  • Bring sunglasses to wear home. Eyes may be light sensitive.

  • If you have eyelash extensions, they must be taken off prior to procedure.

  • Do not dye or perm lashes for 2 days prior.

  • Do not use eyelash curler the day of the procedure.

  • Discontinue use of eyelash growing serums like Latisse 2 months prior to procedure.

  • If you have had any type of eye surgery, consult with the physician about how long you should wait before having a permanent eyeliner procedure. Most physicians give approval 2 months after cataract surgery, Lasik, and blepharoplasty.

Lip Blushing Instructions

  • Gently exfoliate your lips with a warm wet towel or lip scrub. Afterward, hydrate and soften with moisturizer or lip balm for a few days before the treatment.

  • If you get cold sores, you will definitely need an antiviral treatment (ex: Valtrex, or at least l-lysine). Physicians usually instruct patients to begin taking it 3 days before your procedure, for a course of 7-10 days. But even if you have never had a cold sore, 90% of the population have the virus that they are not aware of. A number of factors can TRIGGER (not cause) the virus, permanent makeup is one of them.

  • If you have had any type of lip surgery, consult with the physician about how long you should wait before having a permanent makeup procedure on the lips. Most physicians give approval 21 days after lip filler injections. If the lip surgery involves an incision (like a lip implant), the incision needs to be healed for about 6 months before tattooing on top of it.

Eyebrow Instructions

  • Do not tweeze, wax, or dye brows for 2 days prior.

  • Electrolysis should not be done for a week prior.

EYEBROW AFTERCARE

  • Do not let any water, lotion, soap, or makeup touch your eyebrow area during the first 7 days after your procedure.

  • Please wash your face carefully around the eyebrow without getting water on the treated area. During the shower, keep your face away from the showerhead or take a bath.

  • Itching and flaking may appear during the first seven days post-procedure. Avoid picking or scratching, as it can pull off scabs prematurely and cause patchy results due to pulling out the pigment or even scarring.

  • After 4 days, make sure your hands are completely clean and gently apply the post-care ointment that was provided to you after your appointment with a cotton swab and clean hands. This can be done twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, but be sure to use the ointment sparingly as your skin needs to heal itself. Please continue to apply the ointment for 7 days. Following this aftercare thoroughly will ensure the symptoms disappear quickly.

The following must be avoided during all 14 days post-procedure:

  • Sports/heavy physical exertion

  • Increased sweating

  • Sun tanning or salon tanning

  • Swimming

  • Sun tanning or salon tanning

  • Hot sauna, hot bath, or Jacuzzi

  • Exposure to UV/UVA Rays or chemicals, as they have been known to cause a shift in color and premature fading

  • Any laser or chemical treatments or peelings, and/or any creams containing Retin-A or Glycolic acid on the treatment area.

  • Picking, peeling, or scratching of the micro pigmented area in order to avoid scarring of the area or removal of the pigment.

  • Performing tasks related to heavy household cleaning, such as garage or basement cleaning, where there are a lot of airborne particles and debris.

  • Drinking alcohol in excess may lead to slow healing of wounds.

  • Driving in open-air vehicles such as convertibles, boats, bicycles, or motorcycles.

  • Touching of the eyebrow area except for when rinsing and applying the post-care cream with a cotton swab.

If you have any unexpected problems with the healing of the skin, please contact MariRose Tattoo immediately to discuss instructions on how to proceed.

Contact a physician if you develop any of the following signs or symptoms:

  • fever

  • redness, swelling, or tenderness at the procedure site

  • elevated body temperature

  • red streaks going from the procedure site towards the heart

  • green/yellow discharge that is foul in odor.

Lip Blushing Aftercare

  • Lip color will be very bold until the initial shed. Around week two they may appear lighter but by week three they will darken and be the final end result color.

  • Swelling, oozing, and redness tend to happen as the body's natural response after receiving the tattoo. Swelling and redness should last between 24-48 hours.

  • Use Ice packs as necessary for the first 24 hours. (15 minutes on, 15 minutes off as needed)

  • Do not rub or pick at your lips. Keep them moisturized only by washing them with cotton pads or with the balm provided at the appointment.

  • Avoid foods that cause irritation to your lips (like spicy foods) or anything else that may rub against them and cause friction.

  • Avoid wearing any makeup until lips are completely healed.

  • Use a balm with SPF after your lips are completely healed.

Permanent Eyeliner After Care

  • Using a fresh Q-Tip, apply a light coat of Vaseline to the tattooed area twice a day. Keeping the area moist during the first 5-7 days will help the tattooed area hold color and heal evenly. It is normal for the pigment to fade 30-50% within the first two weeks.

  • Do not touch the tattooed area with your fingers. This increases your risk of infection.

  • Do not rub or scratch your eyes. This increases your risk of a corneal abrasion.

  • If you should experience swelling, an ice pack may be applied using a thin protective barrier such as a paper towel. Icing is most effective in the first 24 hours following the procedure. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated can also reduce any residual swelling.

  • Do not apply makeup or mascara on or near the tattooed area for 7 days. Purchase new makeup or mascara to avoid contamination or bacterial infection.

  • Do not scrub or pick at the tattooed area. Doing so can cause the pigment underneath to be pulled out. Allow the epithelial skin to flake off by itself.

  • Do not use makeup remover or creams and avoid pools and hot tubs for two weeks.

  • With freshly washed hands, you may gently cleanse the eye area with tepid water. Avoid cleansers, soap and washcloths.

  • Do not wear contact lenses for 72 hours following the procedure. If possible, use a new pair.

  • Sunglasses are recommended to protect the eyes when outside.

Please notify MariRose Tattoo immediately should you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • redness in or around the eye

  • matting or drainage

  • pain that becomes increasingly worse

  • difficulty keeping your eyes open

  • sensitivity to light.

Pre Appointment

Sleep-

The last thing you want is to come in and be completely exhausted for your tattoo session. It is incredibly important to be well-rested so that you can be alert and in-tune with your body. As you are getting tattooed you want to be able to read the signals your body is sending you and react appropriately. You don’t want to be falling asleep in the chair as your artist tries to put the care and detail into your tattoo. We recommend getting into bed earlier than you normally do. This will give you extra time to rest and fall asleep, especially if you’re super nervous about your appointment.

If you show up tired for your session, it is best to let your artist know that you didn’t get the best night’s sleep. Otherwise, your artist won’t know how you are truly feeling and it will make your appointment feel a lot longer and your body could become more sensitive to pain as you continuously yawn and stretch your way through your session.

Take the extra time and get that good night’s sleep; you will definitely thank yourself for it during your session.

Drink Water-

Before you get in that chair, you want to make sure that your body is hydrated. We have all been at the point where we haven’t been feeling the best and a glass of water feels like the most amazing thing ever. It is even more important before you get tattooed!

24 hours before your appointment you should be drinking a lot of water. A good goal is to aim to drink eight 8-oz glasses of water to fully ensure that your body is in the best shape possible. Not only is it good for your health, but it will make sure that your skin is hydrated and prepared for your tattoo session. Hydrated skin takes ink a lot better than dehydrated skin which will make the entire process a lot smoother for your artist. If you didn’t have a chance to drink a good amount of water before your appointment, we recommend keeping a water bottle with you during your session.

Wash up-

This one might be obvious but we wanted to mention it just in case. You should be showering every day (hopefully), but please remember to do so before your appointment. You want to keep your skin as clean as possible since tattooing creates small cuts and opens the skin up. Do not show up after a hard gym session or after a game of basketball. Not only will your skin not be clean, but your poor artist will have to sit through the smell of sweat and dirt as they get up and close to your skin.

Be Sober-

It is normal to be scared for your session, especially if it is your first tattoo. However, you will be turned away if you show up under the influence of alcohol or drugs. These are not the solutions to being scared of the pain or the needle or anything about the process that may frighten you. Furthermore, it is extremely dangerous to drink alcohol before your appointment as it thins your blood and puts you in danger for various complications.

Lastly, you should also avoid aspirin and any medication that thins your blood. If you are taking prescription medication, please talk to your health care provider to find out if you should be getting tattooed.

No Damaged Skin-

If you have any cuts, bruises, burns, peeling or fresh tans your tattoo appointment may be postponed. The main reason is that your tattoo will have a difficult time healing because your skin is going through trauma. The damage caused will lead to complications as your body tries to take in the ink during the healing process.

No Hardcore Exercise-

Exercising before your tattoo is fine but you should avoid activities that drain your muscles and make you super sore. Anything that strains your muscles will make your tattoo process a lot more painful as your muscles will already be aching.

No Touchy-

Your artist will have all their tools laid out to make sure they have a sanitary workstation that is ready to help them give you the best tattoo possible. The last thing you want to do is infect your tattoo by touching the open wound or your artists’ workstation and contaminate their gun, needle or ink. If you are not feeling well please let your artist know immediately and they will take the proper steps.

Aftercare

Once the tattoo is complete the artist will dress your tattoo with a Saniderm bandage. This bandage will be left on for 72 hours.

After the 72 hour period it is recommended to remove the bandage while showering. To remove Saniderm, find an edge of the bandage and pull it back over itself in the direction of hair growth. The shower is the ideal place to remove Saniderm. Dry removal of Saniderm may cause discomfort and added trauma to the skin.

Discard the used bandage and wash the tattoo with a mild soap, preferably fragrance-free. I recommend using Dial Gold or Dr. Bronner's fragrance-free soap.
